Clinical Pilates is a modified form of the original Pilates taught by Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Physiotherapists. Clinical Pilates aims to help clients develop their deep postural core muscles that support the spine, and improve posture and functional movement. Clinical Pilates can also address muscle control, flexibility, stress & tension and nerve mobility issues.
Clinical Pilates can also help with injury rehabilitation. A proportion of our chiropractic patients continue to experience further episodes of back pain, and we know from research into this area that rehabilitation and retraining of the deep abdominal, pelvic and spinal stability muscles is key to supporting the spine throughout movement and reducing the risk of re-injury.
Further research was conducted into segmental spinal movement and stabilisation, pre- and post-injury, and Clinical Pilates was developed. It takes clients right back to the basics, and breaks down the exercises into clearly defined levels to ensure a safe, gradual progression.
Our principle chiropractor, Andrea Howell has trained to be able to offer clinical Pilates in both classes and 1:1 sessions, from beginners to advanced level.
Clinical Pilates is suitable for people of all ages and abilities, and is particularly beneficial for those with back pain, poor posture, sports injuries, arthritis and after pregnancy. For elite athletes and performance artists, Clinical Pilates can complement their training by addressing sport specific muscle imbalances, injury prevention/recovery, and developing whole body strength and flexibility.
Before your assessment, if you're not already a chiropractic patient, you will need to complete a short medical questionnaire to ensure safety. This with be reviewed with your instructor as well as to discussing your overall aims and goals.
A postural and functional assessment is done to help identify specific target areas to be focused on during your programme and the correct level for your exercises. You will then be introduced to the basic Pilates principles, 5-key elements, and we will set some exercises depending on your assesment to enable you to practice at home in between sessions.
1:1 Pilates sessions ensure that everyone receives close supervision and a unique bespoke programme. Our 1:1 sessions are ideal for those looking for help with their technique in classes, with injuries or medical conditions, or those who want a session specifically designed for their bodies needs and target areas.
Sessions are mat-based so easily transferrable for practice at home. Each 1:1 session we will aim to progress the difficulty level of your exercises and work different target areas to help you work towards your fitness goals and/or injury recovery.
